Computer Hardware Vendors
Published in CORE Jul/Aug, 1993
Where shall one go to purchase a computer, its accessories and peripherals? The question is always persisting in the minds of a computer buyer. In order to facilitate the buyer, CORE surveyed the hardware vendors in town and have listed them and the brands they sell. We hope that it will be useful in making a suitable decision in buying a computer, its accessories and peripherals. The survey may not have covered all the vendors, though it has been tried not to miss anyone.
Brands and the Vendors:
Warranty and Post Warranty Service:
While purchasing c computer, it is always important that you go for the best brands, look fr how long the warranty is given by a particular company and of course the after sales service. Obviously, the longer the warranty period, the better it is . Not only that, if any special support is also given after the warranty period then it could be considered a good advantage. Listed below are the companies with their warranty period and their after sales service.
How much should a Tender Document cost?
It is customary that the tender quotation document is priced a certain amount. Recently, Rastriya Banijya Bank quoted their tender document price to NRs. 6000/-. CORE questioned the various hardware vendors to react on this. From our survey, it is seen that many vendors found it as too high.
One quoted as, * It indicates that the organization like Banijya Bank don't want to provide any opportunity to small supplier and they don't want any problems." Another quoted," Tendering is now a partial budget generating scheme in some institutions. They charge 6000/- non-refundable, but tenders are subject to cancellation without any reasons. We loose our money just for nothing." Another simple quotation was, "That's why we did not participate."
Two companies were on the favour of the high price and quoted as, " Should be higher so that only genuine computer vendors will be interested." Two companies declined to comment on it.
It is also seen that most of the hardware vendors repair the machine by giving a replacement computer, if it collapses during the warranty period. Many suggest their clients to purchase genuine software and some propounded depending upon the client.
Almost all the vendors have a complaint that their clients call them for very minor problems which are meant to be solved by the clients themselves. None of the vendors think that their clients are good computer users.
In Nepal, computer buying growth rate is rising rapidly and this has led to opening up of more and more hardware firms. Most of them are tied up with foreign companies as distributors and dealers of them and some are selling the assembled brands. In this process, the brands being sold by various companies are thereby also increasing in number.
It is seen that most of the vendors in Nepal give warranty of one year and more or less provide some kind of post warranty service as well.
